Dos and don'ts

The Singaporeans are not only business-minded, they also like to eat and eat frequently. So business and food belong together. To get to know each other and in any case after a successful conclusion, a meal together is one of the most important ingredients for a successful business relationship. Above all, it serves to build a basis of trust; but business can also be talked about. If there are several invitations in a row, payments are often made alternately. Dividing the bill is definitely not an option. This would contradict the Asian striving for community and harmony.

It is important to ensure that no suspicion of bribery arises, not only with guest gifts, but also with invitations to dinner. Corresponding caution is therefore advised, especially with evening invitations to expensive gourmet restaurants immediately before the contract negotiations. Public service employees in particular have to protect themselves from possible allegations of corruption.
